Iranian border guards fatally shot Ali Zarghami, a 52-year-old kolbar, in the border area of Saqqez, Kurdistan Province, in the early hours of 3 March.

The Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN) has learned that at 02:00 local time on 3 March, the border guards opened fire on a group of kolbars in the Mishiaw border area of the Sarshiv district of Saqqez without warning and at close range, killing Zarghami.

Zarghami, a father of three from the village of Sari Bagh in Takab, West Azerbaijan Province, lived in Saqqez.

Data collected by the KHRN reveals a disturbing trend, citing incidents in February 2023 when two kolbars – Seyvan Sahihi and Jafar Faraji – were shot dead by Iranian border guards in the border area of Baneh, Kermanshah Province. Additionally, kolbar Farid Roubina succumbed to harsh weather conditions in the border areas of Marivan, Kurdistan Province.
