Iranian security forces arrested a cleric and a student of religious studies in Piranshahr and Javanrud as part of the ongoing wave of arrests of Kurdish Sunni figures.

On 31 January, Ebrahim Salimi, the imam of the Chahar Yar-e Nabi mosque in Piranshahr, West Azerbaijan province, was detained after being summoned to the office of the Ministry of Intelligence in the city.

He had previously been summoned to the security agency for expressing his support for the recent anti-government protests in Iran.

Also on 29 January, security forces broke into the family home of Seyyed Taregh Hosseini, a student of religious studies from Javanrud, Kermanshah province, and arrested him.

In the past month, security forces arrested at least nine Kurdish Sunni figures in the cities of Piranshahr, Sardasht, Javanrud and Sanandaj.
