Khabat Shakiba, an environmental activist from Sanandaj who was sentenced to 3 months of imprisonment or a fine of 15 million Rials on charges of disturbing public order in September this year, paid the fine instead of going to prison.

The Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN) has been informed that, on Aug 16, 2018, Khabat Shakiba was summoned to the court following a telephone call and his hearing was held at Branch 103 of Sanandaj Penal Court on charges of disturbing public order during the participation in the Newruz and International Labour Day.

The above-mentioned verdict of ‘three months of imprisonment or payment of 15 million rials’ against Shakiba was served on him on Aug 26, 2018. After the verdict was finalised, the defendant paid the fine on Nov 4.

It is worth mentioning that a number of civilians and activists have been summoned or arrested by security agencies for attending ceremonies like the Newroz or International Labour Day.
