The Islamic Revolutionary Court of Orumiyeh has sentenced Kurdish Sunni activist Jafar Osafi to seven years and six months in prison for “membership in religious extremist groups”.

On 31 July, the court officially notified the activist detained in Orumiyeh Central Prison since June 2020.

Jafar Osafi is a religious activist from Bukan and one of the admins of a Sunni religious telegram channel about answering questions on religion.

Security forces arrested Osafi in Bukan on 7 June 2020. After spending 38 days in the detention centre of the Ministry of Intelligence in Orumiyeh, he was transferred to the city prison.

After more than a year of uncertainty in the activists’ case due to a legal dispute between the Islamic Revolutionary Court of Orumiyeh and Special Clerical Court, his trial was finally held in Branch 1 of the Islamic Revolutionary Court in Orumiyeh last month.
