A group of prisoners of conscience, who had been on a strike since 12 December to protest against their transfer to a newly-built high-security ward in Iran’s northwestern Orumiyeh, ended their strike today after meeting with the head of the prison.

The prisoners initially refused to receive prison food for five days. Last week they turned it into a hunger strike.

Reportedly, the head of Orumiyeh Central Prison visited the ward for political and religious prisoners today. In a meeting with the 47 prisoners, he agreed not to transfer them to the new ward.

The striking prisoners ended their hunger strike after the promise of the prison head.

With the transfer of prisoners to the new ward, all their communication with other wards would be cut off.

Additionally, the new ward has a smaller area and fewer services and facilities than the other wards.

It has been built next to the ward for prisoners carrying out penal labour and on the area of the prison’s main bath on two floors; one for the prisoners of the military court and the ground floor for political and religious prisoners.
