Prisoner Aref Havasi was executed on 20 June for “premeditated murder” in Ilam Central Prison in western Iran.

Havasi, a 27-year-old resident of Qajar village in Ilam, allegedly killed one of his close friends during a group fight about two years ago.

His death sentence was handed down under the Islamic law of qisas, or retribution-in-kind, which gives the victim’s family the right to retaliate.
