Over the past two weeks, a bedbug infestation in the women’s ward of the Juvenile Detention Centre of Sanandaj, Kurdistan Province, has led to protests by inmates, but the prison authorities have yet to respond.

The Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN) has learned that 56 prisoners are currently being held in four rooms in the women’s section of the facility.

There have been reports of poor sanitary conditions in the prison in recent years.

Since the outbreak began two weeks ago, inmates have suffered both physically and mentally, and their protests have been largely ignored by prison officials.

According to sources, poor hygiene conditions in the facility have facilitated the bedbug infestation.

Prison officials have cited budgetary constraints as the reason for their inaction.
